European network on rare congenital skin diseases

OBJECTIVES:

SkinDev network is financially supported by European Research Agencies from Germany , France, Israel and Italy for three years (2012-2014).

It is devoted to the design of in vitro and in vivo models of congenital rare skin diseases for molecular characterization and drug screening

Background and present state of the art in the research field:

SkinDev european network will focus on the development and characterization of cellular and animal models for rare genetic skin diseases based on induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. We will concentrate on three groups of congenital pathologies: p63-related ectodermal dysplasia syndromes, autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses, and syndromic ichthyoses. Curative therapies do not exist for these severe disorders. Models that recapitulate the major features of these disorders will be instrumental for studying their pathophysiology, identifying novel markers for the diseases, and for the preclinical development of new approaches to the treatment of these severely debilitating conditions.
